ePortfolio Post IV: Proposing Change

My group and I had our clinical rotation together on R3 at Maine Medical Center, which specializes in wounds and burns. Having very little knowledge of both wounds and burns, I was curious to see what some of the nursing priorities were on the floor. One thing that our group noticed was that central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) were heavily spoken about with frequent workshops showing nurses how to prevent and manage a CLABSI.

After speaking with our clinical instructor, our group decided that there may be some extensive information about CLABSIs that we could use and research. After completing the literature review, I found that there was much more extensive knowledge, though seemingly simple, about the prevention of CLABSIs and overall hospital-acquired infections. My group and I had a little trouble at first determining the most appropriate proposal; however, we decided to focus out project and research on the prevention of CLABSIs using evidence-based practice. We also thought that, if we were lucky, we may be able to influence new practice standards to our previous clinical rotation on R3.

Our findings are incredibly relevant to modern practice standards and will be helpful knowledge when we become nurses. Our team worked hard together and in unison, which thankfully made things a little easier and was one of our successes. Our greatest downfall, however, was finding relevant sources that were specific to the guidelines created by the EBP curriculum. We decided to meet a couple times as a group and to inquire with our professor to determine where we were lacking. Once we overcame those challenges however, we were back to going strong on our pursuit of knowledge.

I am excited to learn more about our topic, to create thoughtful and meaningful content, and to spread my newfound knowledge to other nurses or students who may not know as much about CLABSIs and their prevention. I hope our group continues to go strong and that we are able to finish this project on a positive note.
