This introductory course integrates previous learning from the arts and sciences and inter-professional studies with holistic concepts of caring to support the health and well-being of people. Emphasis is placed on the knowledge and science of nursing that includes, but is not limited to, self-care, self-awareness, comfort, and homeostasis, which provide a foundation for one’s individual nursing practice. Basic nursing skills are introduced to foster emerging clinical reasoning.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explore the relationship of knowledge from the humanities, arts and sciences to the provision of holistic nursing care.
- Demonstrate the use of therapeutic communication and the application of beginning nursing skills as a basis for practice.
- Recognize moral, ethical and legal elements inherent in the formation of professional nursing values.
- Recognize the role of data collection, using nursing skills and evidenced-based knowledge, together with informatics, in the planning and delivery of nursing care as a member of an interprofessional team.
- Identify the elements and environments required for the delivery of quality health care
- Discuss the importance of self-care as a foundational element in the delivery of quality and safety in nursing care.
- Describe the impact of selected health care issues on the provision of nursing care to diverse individuals, families and groups.
